VJ Sport are known for their reliable performance and durability. This was no different when the original Ultra running shoe came out in 2022. However, never believing to have reached perfection, VJ Sport listened to wearer feedback and have somehow improved this extremely versatile running shoe!

When the original VJ Sport Ultra arrived it was the missing jigsaw piece to complete the Finnish brand's superb line-up of shoes. The newest member to the team, as the name subtly hints, is aimed at longer distance runs with its higher cushioning, while retaining the trusty grip and superb ground feel for technical terrain that VJ is known for.

The VJ Ultra 2 is ideal for runs on loose and wet, to dry and dusty. Outstanding for longer distances (up to around 60km or so we reckon) as the name implies, it is also an excellent choice for shorter distances when you want a little extra cushioning and comfort. Providing you with the confidence to run as slow or as fast as you wish on relaxed to technical trails, the added protection, increased durability, and enhanced fit of the VJ Ultra 2 make it one of the most reliable running shoes to date.

Long-term cushioning for trails

The VJ Ultra 2 is a step up in cushioning on the VJ MaXx, with 27mm and 33mm of EVA at the heel and forefoot respectively. This extra amount underfoot offers a more protective and cushioned ride for those longer distances, while the 6mm heel-to-toe drop keeps the foot sitting nicely.

The feel of the midsole in the VJ Ultra is not so much a 'soft' one with a distinctive bounce such is the case with many shoes these days, but it delivers a more controlled landing and energy return to ensure that the Ultra 2 provides that nimble and stable feel on trail you need (particularly technical ones). This is even more so in the second iteration of this VJ model with the addition of a new rock plate - this not only now adds full foot length protection but also further minimises energy loses on each footstrike. Once these have been for a few runs you're feet will bed nicely into them to create a really personal fit and running experience.

Sometimes more cushioned shoes give you an unsettling degree of uncontrollability over your feet yet despite the Ultra's higher stack height, this does not become a problem. This is down to a combination of things: a wider footprint and fit for the foot to work with in a more responsive way; the firmer midsole foam takes away that less stable and unpredictable 'squish' (think how difficult standing on a soft pillow is); the tried and tested Fitlock system that provides superb support around the foot; and simply a well honed shoe geometry for a smooth and controlled ride.

The last on the VJ Ultra is a medium+, which is suitable for a wide variety of runners. With the Ultra 2 a little added forefoot space gives you comfort, balance and stability and good toe wiggle room for when the miles rack up. A 6mm heel-to-toe drop also encourages a more natural foot strike and therefore improved running economics over longer distances.

If you're in need of more cushion yet don't want take a knock to your running confidence on trails and particularly technical terrain, the VJ Ultra really stands out amongst the sea of max cushioned trail shoes in this regard.

Phenomenal Grip

The Superior Contact outsole is produced from VJ's famous, very special, rubber compound, butyl rubber, which really does indeed provide "the best grip on teh planet". Ensuring grip on a multitude of surfaces, the increased coverage of this rubber at the forefoot not only enhances the traction on your runs, but also reduces lateral flexion in the toebox area which in turn reduces foot chafing and rubbing.

Fitlock ensures fit

The innovative system is designed to improve the fit of the shoe, making it feel like part of your body. Integrated with the lacing, the Fitlock system tightens the shoe on the inside and under the arch of your foot to provide superb foot hold and support.
